Early College Academy

Maria Magdesyan was born in Armenia and immigrated to the U.S. at 16 years old. She graduated with honors from Hollywood High School and holds a bachelor’s in psychology, a multiple subject teaching credential, and a master’s in educational administration from Cal State L.A.

“GEAR UP is the perfect way for me to give back. I received a lot of help and support from my teachers when I was in high school. I am passionate about helping students and families that are in the same shoes I was in when I first arrived in the United States.”

Fernando Becerra, who has hands-on experience working with children and families from underserved communities, holds a bachelor’s in psychology from UCLA

“I believe that contributing to GEAR UP’s mission would allow my experiences in counseling to thrive and would support a more inclusive population of students in achieving their academic goals.”

Jessica Chai, who was raised in the San Fernando Valley, holds a bachelor’s in international studies from UC Irvine and a master’s in counseling from Cal State Northridge.

“I really enjoy the student interaction that comes with being a counselor and getting to know students’ unique personalities. I love that everyone is truly working together as a team and believes in the mission of GEAR UP.”

Erika Dominguez – who holds a bachelor’s in sociology from Cal State L.A. – joined the GEAR UP team after seeing her sister benefit as a GEAR UP student while in high school.

“It made me realize I wanted to be part of a program that helped students every step of the way. It also gave me an opportunity to give back to my community and help students and parents grow and prosper.”

A West Adams Prep High grad, Rosangela Melendez holds bachelor’s degrees in art and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.

“The road to college can be overwhelming and scary for students and their families. I like that GEAR UP explores all the options available to a student instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.”
