To boost students’ early exposure to four-year universities, majors, and careers, GEAR UP 4 LA took members of the Class of 2024 to various universities during Spring Break.
On April 11, students had the opportunity to visit UC Irvine, UC Riverside, or UC Santa Barbara, where they toured the campus grounds and explored match and fit – whether these universities were the right places for them to succeed within the fields of study they are planning to pursue.
I hope that I’m able to join any [UC campus], particularly UCSB, after my high school graduation. UCSB is one of my dream schools. Visiting UCSB in person is so exciting to me.

Accompanied by GU4LA staff, students heard from current UC students about college life, learned about academic pathways, and other offerings to help inform their postsecondary choices after high school. They also participated in scavenger hunts in which they learned fun facts about the university they were visiting.
This was the first in-person college tour for several students.
“Because I’ve never been on a college tour before, I would hope to participate in this tour to be able to experience it and see what other colleges are out there to open and expand my choices for when I started applying to different colleges in my senior year,” another #GEARUPworks student said.
