Chicano/a Latino Education Foundation- CAPA and PAL Scholarship Winners – October 25, 2018

Congratulations to GEAR UP 4 LA students Maribel, Eliza, Juan, Jasmin, Nathaly, Ahamed, Juan, Astrid, and Jonathan for winning the CAPA and PAL scholarships from the Chicano/a Latina/a Educational Foundation (CLEF)! Every summer GEAR UP 4 LA works alongside our partner CLEF to give our students the opportunity to attend the Career and Academic Preparation Academy (CAPA) and the Peer Academic Leadership Conference(PAL). This year these residency programs took place at UCLA, and students got the opportunity to live in the dorms and get a taste of what it will be like when they attend college!

Students attending CAPA: experienced workshops on the differences between careers and majors, talked to professionals from various career fields and learned about their paths to get there, learned how to be a great presenter and write a professional resume, were taught interview skills and techniques, participated in mock interviews, and much more! Students who attended PAL: learned about the four systems of higher education, A-G requirements, financial aid, eligibility vs. competitiveness, and the importance of extracurricular activities. They also participated in college admission transcript evaluation, created college lists, and received a comprehensive review of the college process!

Our superstar GEAR UP 4 LA students won scholarships based on academic performance, involvement in extracurricular activities, and their abilities to demonstrate resiliency and leadership.

Thank you, Hugo Cristales and all the wonderful people at CLEF for being great partners and helping to create these opportunities for our GEAR UP 4 LA students!
