See How We Celebrated National GEAR UP Week – September 23-29, 2018

School Site Events

Thank you to members from the staff of U.S. Senator Kamala Harris for visiting our GEAR UP students during this special week!

Helen Bernstein HS and Stem Academy of Hollywood brought the GEAR UP Week festivities with their “College Knowledge Fair”!

Mentor Summits

Students from Helen Bernstein High School, STEM Academy of Hollywood, RFK Community Schools, and West Adams Prep attended the GEAR UP 4 LA 2018 Mentor Summits at Occidental College and Los Angeles City College. Our student mentors expanded their knowledge and understanding of “Match and Fit”, learned about building their brand and how to advocate for themselves and others throughout the college application process.

GEAR UP Week for Parents

GEAR UP 4 LA continued to advocate for the families of our students and empower our parents to help assist their children in the college going process.

Parents and their children attended a workshop from the admissions office of UPenn to kick off GEAR UP Week.

GEAR UP 4 LA worked alongside partner programs Families in Schools and the PLUS ME Project in order to help our parents advocate for their children and to learn the value of their personal stories and the importance this will have when applying to and going away to college.

Teachers

GEAR UP 4 LA continued to build and form stronger relationships with and empower the teachers at our school sites. Teachers at RFK’s Now Academy and West Adams Prep participated in teacher coaching sessions using the Texas Instruments Inspire Calculator in the classroom to widen the use of technology our math classes.

A Message from a GEAR UP Alum during GEAR UP Week

Congrats to Brenda on making her college dreams a reality. GEAR UP 4 LA is so excited to have been part of your journey.

GU Staff

The GEAR UP 4 LA Staff continues to grow professionally in order to meet the needs of our students. Staff members attended the 2018 CSU Conference to receive all of the updated information our students will need to be competitive when applying to the California State University system.
