Parent Education

GEAR UP 4 LA recognizes parents as assets in a college-going culture and engages them in activities that foster knowledge about education issues to help them better support their children’s academic achievement. Parents are involved in workshops, college visits, and informal networking opportunities.

With the help of our Parent/Community Involvement Coordinator, GEAR UP 4 LA creates programs that engage cohort parents in supporting, motivating and influencing their students to graduate from high school and attend a post-secondary institution.

GEAR UP 4 LA aids families of English Learners in navigating the educational system and provides early information on how students can obtain a post-secondary education. Bilingual staff, evening and weekend classes and activities, and family services are provided in both English and Spanish to increase family engagement. Community College Partners offer parent development classes in areas such as GED completion, Work Skills Certificates, Citizenship, and English as a Second Language (ESL).

Together with our community partners, GEAR UP 4 LA provides information on the following topics: social/emotional development, financial aid counseling, college admissions and achievement tests, college application procedures, and parental involvement.
